Curious??? Join the Contest!

Once in a while I get comments with questions in them about my beliefs. So far they have all been very respectful and based out of curiosity. I just watched THIS video that NieNie linked to on her blog today. I found that it did a really good job of answering some questions people often have about our church -- the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints.

I recommend the video to all those who have any interest in Mormons. Even if you think you know all about Mormons, you may just learn something you didn't know. I know I learned something new watching it. Anybody want to guess which fact I didn't know? Watch the video. Guess which fact I didn't know in a comment and I will send a prize to the person who guesses right. If more than one person guess right I will randomly pick one of the correct guessers to win.

What is the prize you ask? Hmmm. How about a gift card? Everyone loves gift cards right? $15 gift card to your favorite store (assuming your favorite store is one I can easily get to so I can buy the gift card.) Guesses must be in by end of the day on March 31st. I will announce the winner on April 1st -- No fooling!

Stephanie, I've been reading your blog for about a year now and it comforts me because I had an infant sibling who passed away many years ago. This is the first time I've left a comment but today I am emboldened by the contest. I watched the video and picked up on a few interesting tidbits. My guess for the contest is this: While it is acceptable to refer to members as "Mormons," the term "Mormon Church" is not acceptable. I've never heard it explained that way.

Thank you for your continuing missionary example. I am impressed by you!

I think the fact that you didn't know is: only 14% of the LDS church live in Utah and 1/2 in the U.S.

I know that I didn't know that...and I live in Utah.

Thanks again!

Just finished the video. The one fact that caught me by surprise is the one Colleen mentioned above, Only 14% of the lds church live in Utah and less than 1/2 in the US so I'm going to say that's the one that surprised you too. :)

Just a wild guess, but that those who help out sorting stuff for the church's humanitarian aid are from all different faiths.
:)

I bet you didn't know that Steve Young was a great grandson of Brigham Young :)

I'm going to guess that it's those who work in th Humanitarian Center are refugees or immigrants, not all of the LDS faith and also that they recieve free english lessons. That's what I learned anyway.

I didn't know that less than 1/2 of the LDS population lived in the US. I would have guessed higher, so that is my guess

It looks like we are all on the same path. I'm guessing the bit about the membership stats. 14% in Utah and 1/2 outside the US. Am I right? I would Lurve me a GC! :)

my guess would be about the humanitarian center many from around the world work there and they get english lessons and learn a trade. IT was a great video.

I'm guessing the bit about the humanitarian center workers. That was one I didn't know. :-) I also posted this on my blog today after seeing in on NieNie.

I'm going to guess that you didn't know that Sharlene Hawkes, a former Miss America, was a memeber of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. ??? Maybe?

I enjoyed the video. I've learned so much about the church from reading your blog that I'm surprised that there was something you learned while watching it!

The one thing that surprised me was that less than one-half of LDS members live in the United States. I thought it was more... But I think you knew that, so that's NOT my guess.

MY GUESS is that you did not realized that the people who work in the Humanitarian Center are immigrants or refugees and they are from various faiths.

Thanks for sharing the video with us!

So, like so many others, I'm going with not knowing so many immigrants and refugees from various faith work at the Humanitarian Center.

Thanks for sharing. You should have advertised that Steve Young was the narrator - not that I didn't watch it without knowing that, but it was a big perk and a pleasant surprise!

I remember the church announcing when the membership outside of the US became bigger than the membership inside the US (but it was interesting to hear that only 60 short years ago half lived in Utah alone). But I've never heard it broken down for the state of Utah today so it was interesting to hear it was only 14%. Everyone else is saying that though so I'll think of something else. It's either Brigham being the 3rd great grandfather of Steve or else the family history library having over 1 billion names for everyone to research/resource for free. That's a lot of names. hmmmm . . . were you as big of a fan of Steve as I was as a teenager or not? That's what it comes down to. Well maybe not. I'm so indecisive that I'm changing it to the 6o yrs ago half of the membership lived in Utah.

Great video.

My guess is that you didn't know Brigham Young was Steve's 3rd Great Grandfather.

That 60 years ago more than 1/2 of the church members lived in Utah. I didn't know that. What amazing growth we have seen as a church in just 60 years!

Like several others, I have to guess it's the shift from concentration in Utah, to now just 14% of members living there.

"Less than half of the worlds Mormons live in the U.S"

That is my guess.

My guess is that you didn't know which year the railroad came to the state of Utah.

During a recent meeting a member of our Stake Presidency spoke about temples and temple work. He said that one part of doing family history work was keeping a journal or scrapbook of our own family history. Although he didn't mention blogging, it's obviously a form of family history. I am impressed at how often your blog serves as a missionary tool. I'm also very impressed with the Church's efforts to get the message out using all forms of multi-media (u-tube etc.) You obbiously don't have to answer but I'm curious if you know of anyone your blogging has brought into the waters of baptism?
