Noble's first "word?"

Me and Noble looking out my bedroom window down below at the girls in the backyard taking photos of the butterfly they released on Camille's birthday.

I am often asked if I can tell a difference between having a boy and having girls. Most of the time my answer is, "not so far." I mean yes diaper changing -- well there are obstacles to wipe around there. That is different. But he is a baby. My girls were babies. He has not been my most "adventurous" baby. That was between Camille and Annie. He eats a ton. But so did several of my girls.

I always tell people, "I am sure I will see more differences as he gets older." Well I now have one difference that is fairly stark. My son doesn't say Mama or Dada on cue or when he sees us. He will babble "mamamama" or "dadadadad" but it isn't in relation to us yet. He will, on the other hand, make the sound of a car every time he picks up one of his little toy cars. That is not something girls do. At least not any of mine.

My girls - they all spoke English first -- Not CAR.

Having grown up surrounded by brothers, I spent countless hours making hot wheel tracks through my parents shag carpet with my little brothers. I loved the process of "picking our cars" before we would play. I had to make sure I got one of every kind for every need. A sports car, a van for when we go on trips, a truck in case I need to haul something, a car to take to work...

I love seeing hot wheels in my home again and look forward to my years playing them with Noble.

So awesome

My boys inherently knew that anything long and stick-shaped (like a straw) was a sword or light saber.

I remember making the same comment. My boys instinctively knew how to make car, plane and bomb noises. It was so funny to me because no one ever really "taught" them how to do it!! They just knew. Boys.... they are wonderful! Sound effects and all~

I think boys are born with an innate ability to make sound effects. Seriously.

Just wait until he starts making "shooting" sounds. It's pretty embarrassing when your kid "shoots" every person who passes by him in the grocery store.

And where do they learn it? It's not like I have been encouraging him to be a gun fanatic!

Silly boys.

This made me smile, and brought back memories of when my son was younger. His first "word" was "woof woof" (for dog) then he started making all kinds of truck/tractor/car/airplane sounds. None of which I taught him, he just knew it. My daughter - her first word - shoe! Seriously. Now, the very first thing she says in the morning when I go get her up is SHOES. (followed by much squealing) Boys and girls - they're both awesome!

Love boys and their sound effects! I too grew up surrounded by boys and hot wheels except and picking out the cars before we would play-we had a "rug city" that my mom painted w/streets, houses, shops, etc. Good times! You have a beautiful blog and family.

I have five boys and a six month old girl. Not a day goes by that she doesn't end up with a car in her hands/mouth. Her brothers really like to share.

Your family is beautiful. Thank you for sharing.

I know exactly what you are talking about. I have my first boy after 3 girls and get asked the "do you notice a difference" question all the time. He's now 1 and I am just starting to see the car sounds come out. His first word has been "stop it!" to his sisters who are always mothering him!

Funny, Stephanie!

My first word was "stop it" apparently....

AHhh, I love love love Boys! They are so much fun. Now you just need a brother for him! I think Boys need brothers. The hardest thing for me was knowing Spence had lost his best pal when James passed away. Thanks for your blog. Oh and did you know that me and Mutze Handknit by Ashley are really good friends? I didn't know if you knew that. She was in my ward when James passed away there in Las Vegas. Small world. Loves.
